He’s Got My Back

It’s this thing that he does. When we’re driving in the car.

If he sees me sitting with my arms crossed and it looks like I’m cold, without saying a word he’ll just reach over and turn up the heat on my side of the car. And sometimes to be honest with you, it’s when I’m not even cold. I don’t know, I just tend to ride with my arms crossed in the car. I guess it’s because I don’t know what else to do with them. It’s just something that I do. But still I love knowing, that he’s got my back.

When we’re plotting out how long it will take us to get somewhere, I never ever leave enough time. And he always way overestimates it. Probably because he knows how long it actually takes me to dry my hair. I roll my eyes and tell him to stop being such a Debbie Downer. He gets very serious for a second and says maybe it’s just because he’s being a Realistic Robbie. I throw my arms up in the air and stomp off. But somewhere deep down (ok way, way deep down) I’m really thankful he’s always there to reign me in and to know, that he’s got my back.

At the end of a long day, when neither of us can hardly keep our eyes open but still we want to feel like life is somewhat normal, he’ll take his place on the far side of the couch and I’ll tuck back into him. And we’ll turn on whatever 90’s sitcom Netflix has for us today. I’ll sip on tea or red wine, and feel the steady rise and fall of his breathing behind me. And somewhere in the thin line between waking and sleep I’ll drift away feeling safe, knowing that just like always, he’s there and he’s got my back.

J, yesterday you grabbed this picture and today you couldn’t wait to show it to me. And as soon as I saw it, I just smiled. Because that’s so you. You’re right there looking out for me having my back, even when I don’t know it. Even when I don’t realize it. But I want you to know, it means everything to me.

Even if I do throw my arms up and stomp off sometimes. :)

I hope this isn’t "too much" but the second I read your post this came to mind: Ephesians 5:25 (msg) "Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church—a love marked by giving, not getting. Christ’s love makes the church whole. His words evoke her beauty. Everything he does and says is designed to bring the best out of her, dressing her in dazzling white silk, radiant with holiness. And that is how husbands ought to love their wives. They’re really doing themselves a favor—since they’re already "one" in marriage"
Thanks for leading by example Justin!

Maybe it’s just because I’m emotional right now with so much on my plate, but this made me all misty-eyed. So true.
