How We Saved Two Hours on Our Post-Wedding Workflow!

When it comes to building real work-life balance for creative entrepreneurs, a huge part of that is being as absolutely efficient & effective as possible when you’re working so that you can really be OFF when you’re off. Because the truth is, it’s really easy to lose your whole life to your business if it’s happening a minute here or a minute there at a time. Because you don’t notice it. But pretty soon those minutes turn into hours turn into days, weeks & MONTHS of your life that you could have gotten back if you would have just made some more efficient adjustments at the beginning of the year.

So for Justin & I, we are always looking for ways to shave time off of our workflow without sacrificing quality. We’re looking for those things where we are doing extra work that we shouldn’t have to be or where we don’t have to be the ones doing it. Because if we can save a couple of hours on every engagement shoot & wedding then that really adds up by the end of the year. For us, one of the biggest game changers in our workflow (besides Photo Mechanic & Blog Stomp) was to switch over to a stackable Lexar Card Bay with a USB 3.0 connection as our card reader. This bay has interchangeable readers for CF, SD & XQD cards so you can do all four of one kind or mix and match. We shoot on the Nikon D4’s and those take both CF & QXD so we love that we can download both in the same reader!

We used to come home from weddings and Justin would have to spend another couple of hours after shooting all day, downloading the cards one by one, getting everything backed up on our server, and copying it over to a rugged drive so it was ready for me the next morning. Not only was this slowing the process WAY down because he had to do the cards one by one and wait for each one to finish before he could start the next one, but the connection was also much slower making the transfer take a lot longer.

Now we can just pop all four cards that we shot on that day into the card reader at once, start it copying, and with this super fast connection the whole thing is done in about 10 minutes! We can grab a glass of wine while it’s copying, watch a show on Netflix, and then go to bed! Because the real point of shaving time off your workflow is not to be the fastest or the first to be done….it’s to free up your time so you can spend it with the people who matter most! And get back to actually living your life. Now that’s a workflow I can get behind!

Cheers to that!

What a brilliant little gem this Lexar card bay is! Thanks for sharing.

  2. Deborah Zoe

This has been a HUGE time saver for me too!! It used to take me around three hours to download all cards after a wedding, now it’s just about an hour! I have 8 bays and it makes things so speedy fast! Thanks for sharing:)!

  3. Lindsay

Yes!! I absolutely love my Lexar Workflow! It’s a game changer!

This is going to sound SO SILLY, but I have the Lexar card bay with 3.0 USB connection, but when I fill all 4 bays (or even two bays), it only allows me to upload one at a time. I use bridge to upload and import images off of the Lexar. How do you two lovebirds upload your images? Help! What am I doing wrong?! (See – i told you I was going to sound silly!!!! But really – this bothers me and I need help =*)

This is so helpful! Thank you!

  6. Shannon Rosan

THANK YOU!!!!! This is going to be such a life saver!!!

Kyle definitely gets stuck with the upload job like Justin. I always feel so bad- at the end of a 10 hour day shooting, then driving, and THEN another couple hours of backing up files… yuck! Your post wedding routine sounds MUCH more enjoyable :)
