I sat in the air conditioning and let it wash over my body in waves. We had been out in the heat for several hours now, and this was more than a welcome change. Justin and our friends Chase & Jaime were in line at the coffee counter, and I took that as an opportunity to take an extra large bite out of whatever sugary goodness we had just procured. It appeared to be a hazelnut- or maybe it was butterscotch- glazed donut covered in chopped peanuts. Whatever it was, it was heaven.
People were filtering in and out, and I watched them make their rounds as I absentmindedly picked peanuts off the top and ate them one by one. And that’s when I heard the voice come from behind me.
You better watch out.
I turned to see a man somewhere edging on eighty and wearing a felt green fedora hat with feathers coming out the side. He had on a white button down shirt and a college class ring, and when my eyes met his he smiled like he was in on some joke I couldn’t possibly understand yet. Pardon?
I said, you better watch out. and then he patted his extra large belly and said it could happen to you too. He smiled. And I smiled. And then I looked down at my hazelnut or maybe butterscotch donut, and then back up at him and said,
You know what, I think it would be worth it. :)
Today, here’s to indulging in all the sweetness life has to offer. To savoring every morsel. Even if it turns out we are a little worse for the wear someday when we’re eighty.
Because the way I see it, as long as I get to wear a green fedora with feathers in it… I think it’s going to be a life well lived.
