My Un-Ordinary Life

Yesterday was amazing. Ahhhhhhh-mazing. The kind of amazing that makes you say ahhhhhh. Not like the ahhh as in when you’re at a doctor’s office with a popsicle stick in your mouth. But the kind of ahhh that says this is just what I needed. That kind of ahhh lets you take a deep breath, fill your lungs as full as they’ll possibly go with fresh salt air, and for a moment…just be.

Yesterday we got to do everything on our list….except the laundry. And I am ok with that. :) Because it gave me time to do the things I haven’t done in a long time. Like flip through that stack of magazines that has been piling up all summer, patiently waiting for a little attention. And as I flipped through them one by one, I came across this awesome ongoing segment (is that the right word?) that one of them does called: “I love my {blank} life.”

I thought long and hard about what my entry would be…,y’know for when said magazine calls me up and asks me to be on their cover. Naturally.

And this is what I came up with: I love my {Un-Ordinary} life.

Now, I realize the more grammatically appropriate word here might probably be: extraordinary. If something is not ordinary, it is extraordinary. Amazing, exceptional, fab, fantastic. But somehow the word extraordinary just doesn’t feel that….well….extraordinary anymore. Or at least not extraordinary enough to describe what I’m feeling.

No see, I wanted something that conveyed the absolute polar opposite of ordinary. Un-ordinary. The anti-ordinary. Ordinary’s arch nemesis. Twice removed. Extraordinary after all, really breaks down to just being extra-ordinary (that’s at least how I remembered to spell it in grade school anyway). And who really wants more of ordinary? Who is really in need of some extra ordinary laying around the house?

So there it is. I love my Un-Ordinary life. A life that is anything but ordinary. I love big risks and not playing it safe. Putting yourself out there and taking the chance that you might fall. I love the road less traveled. I love my life.

And I want to know what you love about yours. I want to know what makes you, YOU. So, I came up with a contest for it!!

The RULES:

Post a comment with the sentence “I love my {Blank} life” and then fill in the blank. (**I realize there is boundless opportunity there for potty mouths, but let’s try to keep it PG. Justin’s grandma reads this blog!! :) :)

Then we’ll go through and pick our favorite and the winner will receive a $50 Starbucks card. Because, hey, who doesn’t love their life more with a lil’ bit of free Starbucks money to play with??

And in closing, here’s a shot that I took of Justin recently that epitomizes to me our Un-Ordinary life together. A life of lying on the grass and staring up at a big blue sky. Of watching scary movies in our pajamas. And having more peach cobbler than we could ever need.

That is Un-Ordinary.

  1. Jil Simon

i love my {risorial] life. if i couldn’t laugh (at life and at myself sometimes) what would be the point?

  2. Lesley

My {oh-so-breathless} life. Meaning life takes my breath away by its glorious and joyful moments, the forks in the road, the uphill climbs and downhill runs. Everyday I wake up and thank God that I’m here living this life that leaves me breathless.

  3. Dennis Bullock

    I love my {Christ Filled} life!

  4. Carly

    I love my {insane-in-the-membrane} life!

  5. Tanya Amyote

    Long-time lurker, first-time commenter here!

    I love my {new} life.

I know, that’s such an underwhelming word, but it’s true. In the past year, I’ve had so many new things in my life: A new home, a new dog, a new fiancé who is now my new husband and, of course, all the exciting new things in my business. It’s been one of the best years of my life, and I’m so glad it’s mine.

And, side note, it’s great to come here and know that whatever I read will put a smile on my face. So, thanks! :)

  6. John Paul Halford

    I love my {Southern Country} Life

  7. Mapuana

    I love {my} life!

  8. Anna Sawin

I love my {unexpected} life. I’m a scientist, a writer, an editor, a mother and now, a photographer. I didn’t see it coming, and I love it even more for that.

Yesterday, leaving the hotel I stayed in as a wedding photographer on Block Island, I ran into a young woman from my alma mater, about tot being her senior year. (The t-shirt gave her away.)

After swapping a few stories, she said, "Uh, well, what do you do with your biology major?" And I told her. And then I told her my story means you can be absolutely anything. Even the unexpected.

  9. S

    I love my {indelible} life.

  10. Melissa

  13. Kathleen

    I love my {free-spirited} life.

  14. Sabrena Deal

I love my [unlikely life]. I was never the artsy one of my friends, never the one who anyone thought would live a life of travel and adventure with someone else paying me to come to and fro. I was never the one who would be a college professor, I studied graphic design. Now I have adventures every weekend and watch people’s dreams come true and I report to class where I get to help a generation discover the importance of excellence as professionals who believe in Christ. I’m married to a husband who is more caring, compassionate and funny than I could have imagined and we met online! How unlikely that I would be given such a great talent and the confidence to take the risks involved with living the way God has gifted me to live!

  15. Ali Fitz

    I love my hairy life.

  16. Chelsea McGowan

I could talk for a mile, but instead, I’ll stick to the heart of the contest and answer simply:

    I love my {amazulous} life.

Yes. That’s amazing, and fabulous, all in one word. Trademark pending. But that’s just HOW FANTASTIC my life is.

  17. Dawn Beirnes

I love my "Mee-Maw" filled life. I never thought that when my 3 kids were grown that I would be a "stand-in" parent for my grandson. My daughter is a single parent, so the last 6 1/2 years I have spent helping raise my grandson. I thought I could focus on my life (and photography, finally), but since this awesome little guy is a huge part of my life, I’ve had to slow things down as far as doing things for me. He’s awesome little guy, football player, and just cool! My daughter has just moved out with him, and although he comes to my house very morning so I can take him to school, I’m hoping I can get things rolling with my photography. But if you check out my blog, you’ll see just how awesome Mr. Kaden is!

  18. Tira J

I Love My {life that has been blessed three trillion times over by Jesus, friends and family that love me for who I am}.

  19. Derek

  22. Julia

I love my {muddled} life… just like a finely made mojito… it’s a bit cloudy, but oh so refreshing :)

  23. Heather Corporan

I love my ‘VIDA LOCA’ life. My crazy life, I love it. Cause, well, it’s mine. Nothing Extra-ordinary about that, but I love it because it’s mine. Sometimes my husband will ask me randomly why I love him, and I tell him ’cause your mine’. lol. So that’s what I love about my life. Just simply that.

  24. Graeme Sharkey

I Love my {families positive outlook on} life. Sometimes things happen that we could not have planned, but every single time there turns out to be a positive side effect.

  25. lauren

i love my {race-y} life!! my wonderful boyfriend drives race cars and has for the past 9 years. we’ve been together for 5+ and each week you can find me there at the track cheering him on. i sure know when to back off and give him the space he needs after a bad night or a long week in the race shop, but i also know when to lay the lovin’ on thick and give him the deep, hardcore head-scratches he so very well deserves!!! ;)

  26. Courtney

    I love my {military} life.
I’m a Marine who just came home from a 7 month deployment to Afghanistan, a fiance to a Marine who was just deployed for a year to Afghanistan, a toddler’s mommy, a college student, and a photographer on the weekends. Since my boyfriend is away, I have to play both roles of Mom and Dad to our son, and try my best to continue my schooling while working two demanding jobs. In between all of that, I make it a point to pray every hour for our Marine to return home to us safe and sound. Yet, I’m lucky that I get to experience the feeling of Christmas morning every time my son and I get that 10 minute phone call that comes once or twice a month from our Marine. Despite all of the stress, tears, and miles apart, it’s a beautiful life that I’m extremely proud to live.

  32. Alison

I love my {Flamingo} life. Bright and colorful when fed the right stuff, not necessarily beautiful when you look at each part individually, but stunning when you stand back and look at the whole creature. Makes you smile and laugh by its simple presence. May not have a large specific purpose, but can you imagine life without them?

  33. Lea Garner

    I love my DELICIOUS life!

  34. caroline

I love my {weird} life. We were talking about people that have had weird jobs, just yesterday. Since college I have been a waitress, graphic designer, student advisor, technical support agent, photographer, factory worker, vet tech, web designer, and college professor. It’s been a weird couple of years, but I’ve always been one to embrace weird for all it has to offer.

Oh, and my gram reads my blog too. It’s strange, right?

  39. Josh Ulmer

I love my (Dad/husband) life. Being a dad to a 5month old and a husband now for 5 years has brought so many things into clarity in my life. About what my priorities are and what my priorities need to be….less tv…less wasted time on just being unproductive…it’s a hectic life at the moment for several reasons…but thank God for the breath to do it all..for the healthiness to do it all and for His provision!

  50. maggieb
