Pancake Session: Directional Light & Simplicity of Background

As Justin & I have been thinking more and more about the kind of photography that speaks to us and inspires us, we’ve also been paying attention to what those images have in common. So that we can really understand what it is about them that stands out to us, and the kinds of qualities we want to be creating in our own images as well. From everything from flipping through photography books to magazine ads to even cinematography….we’ve realized that the two biggest things that speak to us are directional, dimensional light and simplicity of the background. Here are some examples:

So as you’re growing more and more in your style or even trying figure out what you want your style to be to begin with, try this exercise. Pull a bunch of images that just on a gut level speak to you (two second decision tops) and then look at them as a collective. What do they have in common? What speaks to you across the board? And then what could you then learn and apply in your own photography? Now go try it! :)

Loved this post! Not only because it has Clark Gable pic’s, or because Gone with the Wind just might be my all time favorite movie (I’m even giving a speech on it in my communications class, talk about facing your fears, and living your dreams). But, because I’m in this process. Trying to figure out my style that is, and on direction from my art teacher this is what I’m doing. Picking out images, ads, etc. that speak to me. Love you guys!

omg!!!! Do I adore these pictures. I can’t wait to see more images from American Honey. If I could go back in time I would live in that era. It’s so glamouros and classy. Have a great weekend!!

Wowsers, isn’t that the truth!?! I’ve been collecting images that speak to me for a while now, but this makes me want to dive in and really try and figure out what about those images draws me in. Thanks again for another inspiring post!
