Profoto’s Year-Long Series: Walk Through a Wedding w/ J&M

When the idea first started, it was just an email. A “hey, what if” idea.

Back in November, the amazing folks at Profoto shot us an email with this idea they had to film us shooting 20 different “must have” wedding shots throughout the wedding day when you don’t have the benefit of natural light. Because like I wrote a while back in an article, “Show me the situation where the photographer preferred/planned to use all natural light & I’ll show you the situation where it went wrong.” Stuff just happens on a wedding day. Sunset ceremonies run late. The getting ready room is in a church basement. It rains on the wedding day & suddenly all the portraits are inside. And having the ability to know that wherever you go, whatever situation you’re in….it doesn’t matter, because you bring your OWN light! :) And you know you’ll rock it no matter what.

Like I said, it started as an idea.

And then that idea turned into a “let’s get together in December for lunch & see what we can come up with.” Three hours (and some amazing macaroni & cheese) later…we had hatched a plan. And we were DOING this thing!

We had just three weeks to basically put together an entire wedding day including bride & groom, wedding party, church, reception venue, details, makeup & more. It was INTENSE. And it never would have happened without an INCREDIBLE team of vendors lead by the one & only amazing Stacie Shea….but I’m going to do a WHOLE other post devoted to them. Because that’s how amazing they are.

Three weeks flew by and the day before we were supposed to start filming, this crazy blizzard hit the northeast. The film crew spent 8 hours in the car just trying to come up from Brooklyn. Our couple (more on them to come too!) were driving down from CANADA, so they basically had to drive all night. But we all made it in to New Haven safe & sound, and three long, incredible, hilarious, amazing days of filming ensued!

The filming of this was SO interesting & amazing to be part of!! To get all the different shots we would do things over & over, and for some things it just meant holding a certain shooting pose while they moved around and got different angles. Do you know how HARD it is to hold that “photographer’s crouch” we all do for like TWENTY minutes at a time?! It was the best leg workout I’ve ever had!!

You make friends pretty quickly with people when you’re spending 12 hour days with them, and so the whole team from Profoto, the whole team from Flying Giant Productions, all the vendors, all the wedding party & us….it kind of felt like we were back in college or something. Completely delirious & couldn’t stop laughing….and when we finally wrapped & hugged everyone goodbye, I did it KNOWING that we’ve made some friends for life! We LOVE all of you guys!

So that’s some of the back story of how it all came to be. And yesterday the first official video dropped (see how legit I am! :) The rest of them will be coming out throughout the year, with a new one releasing every two weeks! You can keep up with all of them by going HERE. But for now, enjoy this kick off to the series!

Friends, sometimes AMAZING things happen when you’re willing to say “hey, what if.”

I’ll look forward to seeing all these videos! Did I see you have switched to Canon gear? I thought you were Nikon lovers! :) If you switched, I’d be interested in hearing why and what Nikon was missing for you.

  2. ruel

Hi, How did you get the shallow depth of field using strong studio flashes? Did you go hypersync on the shutter speed? Thanks

  3. Stephanie Stewart

Sooo cool! Congrats, you guys! Can’t wait to see more!

@Kelly Ewell: LOL! No we’re DEFINITELY still Nikon! The triggers for the Nikons just aren’t out yet so we had to use Canon.

@Ruel Great question… one of the great things about the B1 is that it’s a powerful 500 Ws flash when you need the juice, but it ALSO can be dialed way down to a 2 Ws flash (a 9 stop range!!) when you only need a little bit like shooting wide open. To assist that we did dial our ISO all the way down to 100 or 200 for this shot
