Stuff We Love: Cranberry Sauce (Oooo-Eeee)

We stood in our kitchen together and looked down at the can. We couldn’t possibly…..could we?

I tied knots in our Wiliams Sonoma dish towels and absent-mindedly tapped my fingers on the butcher block counter top.

Hmmmm…..well we ARE grown ups now. I suppose we can do whatever we want.

This flawless logic hung in the air like a speech bubble in a Sunday comic strip, as he looked down at the can again.

Well it is just two days to Thanksgiving…..and technically this day is almost over, so really it’s just one day until Thanksgiving. And I think the day before Thanksgiving totally counts.

We nodded our heads in unison like two old Tories in the British Parliament. And I mumbled a here, here to make it extra official.

He hesitantly reached for the can opener and held it over the metal rim, like he was about to diffuse a bomb and couldn’t decide if it was the red wire or the green one.

Five…four….three…two….one…

I patted his hand. It’s ok, just go with what’s in your gut.

And just like that, the can was open. The whole berry cranberry sauce (y’know the really fancy stuff) spilled out into the bowl, and for just a second we were mesmerized by how it sparkled under the recessed lighting.

Wow, you didn’t tell me it was the *really* fancy stuff.

We grabbed two spoons and piled on the couch like it was chocolate ice cream. Cooper jingle jangled his way over and plopped his head in our laps. I scratched his ear and ate another spoonful of whole berries. And somehow all of life seemed more whole along with it.

We looked at each other and smiled a smile that only comes from doing something you’re not supposed to. And I closed my eyes and gave thanks that that’s a smile we get to see a lot. That Life Unordinary is just business as usual these days.

And just like that, sitting on our couch eating cranberry sauce out of a can, smiling smiles that we’re not supposed to….Thanksgiving came two whole days early around here.

**I would like it noted that Ocean Spray put their label on upside down….and NOT that we’re some sort of weridos who insist on opening the can from the bottom! :P

So tell me, what’s *your* favorite Thanksgiving food? Is it the crrrrrranberry sauce OOOO EEEE?!

  1. Kelly

mmmm cranberry sauce yes please! We make ours from scratch (it’s really easy – really!) But my fave has to be the green bean casserole. Can’t get enough of those french fried onion things!

  2. Dennis Bullock

I has to be the turkey dressing!

  3. Keri Doolittle Photography

We actually serve enchiladas as our traditional "turkey" and LOVE them!!! Special treat, for sure!

  4. Heather

here’s a little factoid for you today… most all cranberry sauce cans have the label "upside down" because they want you to open it from the bottom…something about settling and making it easier to get it out

  5. Chelsea McGowan

Greenie Beanie Casserole!!! I’m the only one that eats it, but my mom still makes a whole dish of it every year, with EXTRA crunchy onions!

  6. Mark Andrew Higgins

CRanberry sauce is so easy to make! Don’t eat it out of a can! It’s as easy as 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup OJ and 1 cup of sugar for 1 bag of cranberries. That’s such a simple recipe and cab be modified using brown sugar, lemon and orange zest, etc…The chef in me just died a little seeing that can!

  7. Ginger

I never even noticed the upside label until last Thanksgiving. I overheard a cashier say they are all like that. Every brand of cranberry sauce. No idea why though!

  8. Graham

Is it weird that my favorite Thanksgiving item is gravy?!? It’s just so darn goooooood!

  9. Lara Kimmerer

Umm…I love this post! I was just saying the other day that I could eat an entire can of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce. I just can’t get enough of it. You have inspired me to have cranberry sauce as a dessert. Happy Thanksgiving!

  10. Cheryl

    Definitely creamed onions!

  11. Tira J

Stuffing and the green bean casserole. Just came back from the grocery store and it was a MAD HOUSE already at 12:45 p.m. Yeah, I think Ocean Spray put the label on upside down. ha ha!

  12. Brent Pilgrim

The stuffing … but it HAS to be SMOTHERED in gravy! I’m a grownup too!

  13. Katie B

I love mom’s cranberry sauce, and broccli and cheese casserole, yummy!!!!

  14. Ashley

Every jar of cranberry sauce has the label on upside down! Haven’t you ever noticed that before? My favorite Thanksgiving food is my mom’s Cauliflower Casserole.

  15. Vanessa Paris

No Thanksgiving here in Australia – but I really wish there was, it’s such a cool thing to celebrate and on a Thursday too :) xoxox

  16. Jessica

    Broccoli and cheese casserole!

  17. Monica Lakes Ouziel

this year my friend christine made fresh oven roasted vegetables and homemade cranberry sauce. those were my favorites made with love from friends

  18. GrandmaIna

I always thought I loved turkey, but now I realize I really LOVE cranberry sauce! It’s great on cake, vanilla ice cream and with fruit salad!

  19. maggieb

all the orange things! candied yams, turnips, pumpkin pie!

  20. Courtney

I must admit, I’m a fan of the cranberry sauce too. I like the canned stuff (for the rest of the year), but at Thanksgiving it’s all about Mom’s homemade stuff (cranberries, raspberries, apples, … that’s all I know). One of these days I’ll get the recipe from her. :)

  21. Jossie

Great deal. Somehow I think that if you take away the stress of coniokg and baking for Thanksgiving, a family can enjoy each other more and in my case, football games even that much more. This is a great option for families or individuals that want to leave the coniokg and shopping to a professional such as yourself. Do you prepare this dinner for guests annually?
