Stuff we Love: Philosophy, Hope… and Cake Batter??

Ok, random fact of the day about me. Ready? I actually got my degree in Philosophy, not Photography. Well, two degrees really. I got a BA from West Virginia University (Go ‘EERS!) in Philosophy and Poli Sci in 2002, and then after that I went and lived in England for a year where I was able to pick up my Masters. And a terrible British accent.

Cheerio.

And so, since I have a love of all things Philosophy it seemed only natural to me that I would also love the line of Philosophy products. And I do!! Yesterday, I got a little visit from the Sephora fairy and she brought me the most wonderful things. See?

First up, is the “Makeup Optional” kit of the Hope in a Jar products. Not that I plan on going makeup-less out in public any time soon. The world is SOOO not ready for that! :)

This kit was first introduced to me at Erin & Brendon’s wedding (who just happen to be next up in line to be blogged! Love it when things come together like that!) and I LOVE it!!! It’s more like miracle in a jar!

The other thing the Sephora fairy brought me is this Vanilla Birthday Cake body wash. It is so delicious. I seriously have to keep reminding myself that it’s soap or I might just eat the whole bottle!! And, in keeping with the random facts of the day theme, vanilla cupcake just happens to be my favorite candle and cake batter ice cream is my favorite flava at Coldstone Creamery. hmmm…is anybody else getting hungry here??

Ok, and now for the final and most important random fact of the day. Today is mine & Justin’s dating anniversary. A date-aversary, if you will. It was exactly 5 years ago today that I walked into a coffee shop for a first date and walked out with the love of my life. And a caramel latte. Score!

***So in celebration of all that, we’ve come up with our “Philosophy of Life” contest!!!

What is a Philosophy of Life contest, you ask? Good question! Here’s the dealio:

Leave us a comment in the box below with your life philosophy in one sentence or less. For example, I think ours would be “Remember what is important to you.” And the one that we think is the best/ most creative will win a $50 gift card and their very own visit from the Sephora fairy. (Guys they have stuff for you too!) So go on!Get your philosophy on!

We can’t WAIT to see what you guys come up with!

  1. Mike

Congrats on your date-a-versary! I have a couple philosophies I rely on, but pragmatism has always run in the family. I remind myself constantly "It will all work out in the end." Regardless of the situation, I look back in surprise at how things work out quite nicely…and it keeps me calm in the midst of tumult. It may take some hard work and a bit of luck, but it really does all work out in the end.

  2. jenberry

seriously you guys are way too cute. happy day to today! (i can’t use mike’s line of date-a-versary. he’s smart). my philosphy would be plain and simple "live each day as it was your only". In light of my husbands recent diagnosis, now I truly know what this means.

  3. Dennis Bullock

So great to here it is your date-a-versary guys! My life philosophy is best said as "Live…Laugh…Love"

Hope you have a good one!

  4. Esther

Congrats on your date-a-versary! You should try When Hope is Not Enough capsules…love them!
I always say that "your life is a series of moments and choices…take them one at a time and try to make the best possible choice in that moment."

  5. Alison

I have yet to check out Sephora, but have heard the raves.
My philosophy on life (today) is Don’t wait for life to happen to you. Happen to life.

  6. Stef

You guys are too cute! Congrats on 5 years!
"Catch the trade winds in your sails… Explore, Dream, Discover" ~Mark Twain. Love this quote cause it pretty much sums it up! Life is an adventure, fo sho! ;)

  7. Michelle

Love that you celebrate your date-a-versary! Hopeless romantics unite! Here is my creed – Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away! So true in the inspiration that all of your images contain! Enjoy your day!

  8. Daniela

Happy Date-aversary! I’ve learned that no matter what happens "life goes on." Tomorrow is a new day and a new beginning. It’s something to look forward to!

  9. caroline

A ship in the harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are for.

    I lovity love Philosophy products!

  10. Julia

Happy Day!!! Hope you are enjoying it!! I thought I was the only person on earth that LOVED birthday cake icecream!!! (does that shared obsession make up for my lack of knowledge about The Office?!?) Mike and I send emails back and forth throughout the day. Sharing inspiring websites, funny tidbits, interesting articles… anything that will provide a little escape from the mundane world of cubicle life. Each email is signed Dream Big XOXO I would say that is our mantra (however grammatically incorrect it may be) It pretty much sums it up in a nutshell for us. Whether its working on our house, talking about life plans, or just sharing a quiet moment… every day should be filled chock full of big dreams and TONS of hugs and kisses :)

  11. Jess

Happy Happy today! I think the occasion totally merits a trip over to Cold Stone for a little somethin’ somethin’ ;) Ok, so here is my philosophy… "be present" I feel like most of the time, we’re too preoccupied thinking of "to do" lists that await, etc. that we don’t stop, and cherish the person we are with, and the memory that is being made IN THAT moment.

  12. Ali

This one was actually sent to me today, and it really resonated. So, not quite my philosophy so far, but perhaps a philosophy going forward: "To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did."

  13. Molly F

My Philosophy of Life: Be passionate. Clean and simple. :)

  14. Audrey

"eat all the ice cream you want, if it makes you blissfully happy". :)

  15. michelle Sidles

Hmmm, life philosophy?? Summed up in a blog comment?

    How about: "Less in More"
Not very creative or inspiring… UNTIL you try living it out. ;)

  16. michelle Sidles

Dude. I typoed my life philosphy in the last comment! That’s not good!

Less IS More… NOT Less IN More. ;) Sheesh. I blew this contest, didn’t I? ;)

  17. Kate

    Live Intensely. Love Immensely.

  18. Lacy Dagerath

"Everything will be okay in the end… If it’s not okay, it’s not the end."

  19. Suzanne

Congrats on the date-aversary! (And compliments on the choice of caramel latte.) My philosophy of life, besides try to get to stuff on the to-do list, like signing up to comment on my favorite blogs, is…. every day is a day I didn’t ask for. Opening my eyes in the morning is like, Hey! I’m here – this is so cool! Add another one to the 10,000 or so gifted days.

  20. Ashley

Infect everyone with your smile..sooner or later they’ll show symptoms too:)

  21. Lacy Dagerath

Hi Justin & Mary! :) I am submitting this on behalf of David Wenzel… "You may (or may not) have 10 years to live. What are you going to do about it?"

    http://www.jumpdavidjump.typepad.com

  22. Brandi

Well, it’s hard for me to sum up in a sentence how I feel, but one lyric has always appealed to me because it is how I really describe myself.. "I’ll make it to the moon if I have to crawl". I’ve seen a lot of bad things in life but I’ve overcome them all one by one and now I am happier than I would have ever expected myself to be, and I feel like the possibilities are endless.

  23. Amanda

"There is no try, only do." Thanks Yoda!

  24. Nicole

One that I’ve often held onto that also ties into my photography business is this: "Life is more than a series of posed moments." I want to remember all the moments that made my life, and my clients’ lives, special. It’s more than just standing in front of a camera with stiff poses and fake smiles. That’s one of the reasons I love what I do and will always know it’s important to do the best I can as a photographer.

  25. Val McCormick

Congrats on your dating anniversary! Yum Vanilla Cake batter! Here is my FAVORITE quote:
"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful."

  26. Christa

    "Keep it Simple"

  27. Val McCormick

Ooops, totally distracted by mac – n- cheese and children, lol. I typed a quote I love. Here is my philosphy :-) "Filled with chapters, life is a story; and you choose your own adventure.

  28. Michelle Clark

I am a total philosphy girl. I can’t live without my Pure Grace. I have so many little philosophies that inspire me. If I had to pick one, I guess it would be "love conquers all"

  29. Leslie Roark

So mine can totally be found on my bio section! "Loving life in the slow lane!" Life can be so faced paced that I am working hard to slow down and love every minute of my life!!!

  30. Leslie Roark

Sorry.. life can be so FAST paced!!!

  31. Shannon

Life Philosophy: the way one thinks/feels/behaves is just as important as the "big" decisions one makes in life, sometime almost more important.

  32. Derek

There are only two important things in life: Love and Be Loved.

  33. Stacey

"Don’t take for granted what you have or what you can do… always remember there is someone that has less than you…."

  34. Nicole Haley

Dream BIG and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! But, can I just say, I had a hard time deciding between that and my favorite haiku poem: "River in summer/There is a bridge but my horse/walks through the water".

  35. Rene Tate

It’s been my mantra since I was 13 and definitely led me to where I am today…. "Remember that EVERY experience is an opportunity – an opportunity to learn, grow, and sometimes influence people you don’t even realize you’re influencing."

  36. Greg Kanaan

It’s not the years honey, it’s the mileage.

  37. Steph Kanaan

The only one who can make your life worth living is You.

  38. Jessica

    "Happy wife, happy life." :-)

  39. Ray

"You don’t need someone to make you whole." A girl in my Junior High School class (which was eight years ago) told me this and I’ll never forget it. Ever…

  40. Lisa H. Chang

Wow … that’s deep. :) For me there’s one thing that’s stayed on my heart and driven me since college, and it’d be something like "pursue God with all your heart and follow Him with no reservations."

  41. Katie Jo

I love philosophy products. My philosophy, or one that I recently learned rather, and am still trying to follow is "fear regret, not failure." It’s coming along, slowly but surely.

  42. Amanda

Find what makes you come alive… and do that.

  43. Vanessa

I think my life philosophy would have to come from those ridiculous text-abbreviation commercials:
    INBD
    (i.e. it’s not a big deal)
I just try to never get hung up on anything :)
    Great blog!

  44. Chelsea McGowan

"By mourning something before it’s dead, you waste the time it’s alive."

  45. Lyndsay Hyatt-Almeida

i’m still leaning, but my philosophy for life right now is, "Remember, it’s not about you." i have to tell myself on a regular basis…:) happy anniversary, and i have to tell you that i’ve been tempted to eat the cake batter lotion before. heehee!

  46. Danielle Fuller

Philosophy of life?:"This to shall pass." Not that every event in life is something that you want to pass, but when those situations do arrive, it seems to be when you need the most strength, and I always call up that philosophy to remind myself that I can make it through anything.

  47. twilight at morningside

Do what you love. Love what you do.

  48. Sara

There are so many that I hardly know where to begin. After giving it some thought, as I tend to do after reading your blogs, the most important life philosophy that I’ve come to rely on is "Challenge Yourself." I love my life, but looking back through the years and even recently, it has only been when I have stepped outside of my comfort zone have I had truly memorable times in my life and made changes that mattered. Challenging myself and stepping outside of where I am most comfortable in life (which is on my couch in my pajamas with Golden Girls re-runs), has meant the difference between contentment and real happiness. And the bigger the step? The bigger the reward. Like life-altering, planets-aligning, so many good things you don’t have a big enough plate. Oh yeah, it’s like that. :)

  49. elizabeth

Live every moment to the fullest

  50. rachel darley

Sheesh, i have two main ones I’ve lived by through my college B.S. and still (ugh)currently my Master’s…but I think the one that has gotten me through alot (sadly enough???) is "Fake it Till you make it!" but when i get in trouble because of it i chant my other life philosphy, "simplicate, don’t complicate"… i guess for me they go hand-in-hand! so, really it’d be "Fake it, till you make it, but simplicate, don’t complicate".

  51. Onada Photography

    be fabulous!!!!!!

  52. Tracy Ann

My philosophy, which finally helped settle my restless soul and mind during college and following periods of doubt and questioning life, is "One must still have chaos in oneself to give birth to a dancing star." It reminds me that it’s okay to be unsettled and be internally chaotic. Eventually, something beautiful WILL come of it.

  53. imthiaz houseman

love what you do, if your not passionate about it then you won’t put 100% in it.

  54. gina amin

"It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice" :)

  55. Mary Marantz

whoa, these are awesome guys!! Keep em coming!!

  56. michelle

I love this one so much that I am going to have it tattooed on my back "Always give more than you take"

  57. Linden

Be who you are, Because you are beautiful :)

    Cheerio!

  58. Brianna Phelan

Live your life loudly enough to have your important words heard, but quietly enough to not miss the important words of others.

  59. Lora Carr

    Breathe. Laugh. Repeat.

  60. lauren

i, too, love the cake batter ice cream from cold stone! YUM!!!
i like to tell myself that "it could always be worse", but i find myself saying "LEAVE YOUR MARK" a lot more often. i’m making sure that those who come after me know that i was once here – both through my photographs and my writing.

"The poorest man is not the one without a nickel, it’s the one without a dream."

  62. Denise Skelton

A friend signed this on the matte/frame at our wedding "Each for the other and both for God." I LOVE it! Married couples should totally live by that!

  63. Sophia

Thank you! Your post today made me pause & consider what my life philosophy has become – "Love, Laugh, Strive & enjoy the moment!"

  64. Joanna Minuk

I believe in the deli # of life philosophy- doesn’t matter how old or what you are doing..when that # is called you are gone from this life… thus live each day as if it is your last on this earth… no guarentee there willbe a tomorrow

  65. Brandi~ Glitz & Glamour

Right now I’m living by the motto "The only ones who catch their dreams are those who chase them!" So I’m pursuing my dreams & goals full-speed ahead.
